Reel Rock Tour 2011

Once again High Country Outfitters is bringing the Reel Rock Tour to Atlanta, GA!

Reel Rock 2011

On Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 the doors of Lefont Theater in Sandy Springs will open at 6:30pm as the climbing scene in Atlanta, GA turns out to support the Southeastern Climbers Coalition.  If you were there last year then you know what I am talking about and if you weren’t be sure not to miss it this year.  High Country Outfitters along with other businesses and associations in the Atlanta area have banded together to bring you Reel Rock Tour IV and it is bigger and better than before.  We are gathering some pretty sweet prizes for the this years raffle  which will also benefit the SCC so get there early and get ya some raffle tickets.  There will be some great vendors on site to answer some questions and show you some of the great new gear that you will of course be able to find at your local High Country.

The nitty gritty:

Sender Films and Big UP Productions are bringing audiences a mind-blowing, palm-sweating pump-fest of climbing flicks for the 6th annual REEL ROCK Film Tour. We’ve gathered the wildest climbing stories from around the globe: The legendary race for The Nose speed record; A nine year old bouldering prodigy; Tommy Caldwell’s efforts on the hardest big wall free climb; A crazed high-lining champion; The most insane ice climbing action ever and more. It’s all part of the cinematic tour de force that is REEL ROCK VI.

September 22nd, 2011.  Showing at Lefont Theater in Sandy Springs 5920 Roswell Road Northeast.  Doors will open at 6:30pm and the show will start at 7:30pm.  Tickets are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door (please bring cash if you can).  Advance tickets can be purchased at either High Country Outfitters Location.

Great Event

Across Antarctica

Well, it was another one for the books at last Thursday’s special event.  Professional Mountain Guide, Ryan Waters, came and told us about his exciting trip where he and his partner Cecilie Skog walked across Antarctica, unsupported.  It was an arduous 70 day, 1,120 mile effort and it was very exciting to hear all about it.  The High Country Team chipped in and we made some BBQ Pork on the Big Green Egg and Sweetwater Brewery was on time with some great beer.  We, of course, did some good as well.  We raised $587.00 to go toward the 2011 Cordillera Blanca Environmental Expedition being mounted by the Deep South Section of the American Alpine Club.  Thanks to all who made it out and donated to the cause.

Boat Rock 2011

Boat RockWhat an amazing time we had at Boat Rock this year!  We couldn’t have asked for better weather.  Check out the slideshow below courtesy of our resident photographer Kelly Bussell and also check out Will’s summary of the day on the SCC website.

$2000.00 Raised for the Southeastern Climbers Coalition

Reel RockWhat an event on Thursday night!!! If you missed it, you missed out.  My palms are still sweating!  The night started with a gathering of friends in the lobby of Lefont Theater.  Folks got to stop by and speak with some of our sponsors and buy some raffle tickets to have a chance to win some fantastic prizes.  Special thanks goes out to all of the people/businesses that supported the raffle with a prize.  The North Face put up some great prizes and PMI donated a rope which was our grand prize.  The ladies from Two Girls & a Mat were there demonstrating some yoga moves for climbers (don’t miss their Sunday morning class at High Country, Buckhead); Chad with the American Alpine Club had some cool giveaways; Trey from Adrenaline was there promoting her Halloween bouldering comp on October 23, 2010 and of course, Will, Tracey, and Joy were working the SCC booth selling raffle tickets and memberships.

Speaking of selling tickets!  We were able to raise $550.00 at the raffle table and after paying for the theater, movie, printing etc, we raised an additional $1450.00 in ticket sales. That’s $2000.00 for the SCC.  We are planning an event in October where we can present the SCC with that $2000.00 check  so be sure to check the site and your email inbox for details.

The movies started with some climbing humor and then got right to the nitty gritty climbing.  Some highlights for me were Peter and Lisa on The Hulk, Dean Potter’s “free basing”, and Ueli Steck the Swiss Machine.  All the movies were great and with the exception of a minor technical difficulty went off without a hitch. Who didn’t want to see Daniel and Paul pull off those amazing sends more than once, right?

Thank you again for all of you who came out and supported the SCC, what a kick-off to the amazing climbing season that is now upon us.  See you all in the Shop and at the Crag.

HC Guide Report: St. Simons

I just got back from a fabulous trip to St. Simons Island to do some relaxing and a bit of Sea Kayaking.  Tammy and I were invited down by our friends Chandler and Stephanie to stay at their family home.  As a thank you we brought down two tandem kayaks from the HC rental fleet.  We stopped in at the local outfitters in St. Simons, Southeast Adventure Outfitters, to get some beta on places to paddle and got some great information on not only where to paddle but when to put in and so forth due to the tide.  We had to carry our kayaks down to the surf from the parking area which was quite a chore.  I will never do that again without a kayak cart or a Kevlar boat!  That was probably the hardest part of our journey.  We launched our boats into the Atlantic Ocean and paddled over to Sea Island where we surfed the waves into shore and hung out for a bit and then entered the marsh which was really cool.  We paddled the meandering river through the marsh to our take-out point, loaded up the Jeep and headed home for a night of libation and good times.  We were able to get in one more trip a few days later.  This time we went in reverse and started in the marsh and followed the tide out to sea.  It was a beautiful evening as we unloaded the kayaks.  A storm was brewing in the distance and about halfway through our trip we got hit with a warm rain.  We skirted up and kept paddling it was very exhilarating and a little dangerous because of lightning in the area.  We hit the ocean and got to the beach just in time.  We had stashed my bike so I hoped on and went to get the Jeep.  We loaded the kayaks and got in the car just as lightning started striking all around us and right where we had just been. All in all we had a great time!  Come on in to High Country Outfitters and rent or purchase a kayak of you own, get out on the water and have your own adventure.

Michael Peterson Trekking Through Switzerland

PetersonRecently the guides at High Country Outfitters helped Michael Peterson and his Dad get outfitted for a trek through Switzerland.  They just got back and Michael sent me some pictures from their travels.  All reports are that they had an amazing trip and all their gear functioned as promised.  Enjoy the pictures.

Laney Goes to the Tetons

One of our favorite customers, Laney Pifke, is finally out in Jackson, WY in the Teton Mountains.  We have been working with Laney and her dad Bruce for a while now making sure we got Laney as prepared as possible.  I hope we did a good job and hope Laney has a safe, exciting adventure.  More updates to come.

Laney made it safe and sound!  Way to go Laney!

HC Guide Joseph Wolfe in Colorado

Recently Joey Wolfe, one of High Countries own, moved out to Colorado.  He has been rafting and climbing and just recently sent us some photos from his latest excursion into the mountains.  What follows are some of his photos and a brief trip report.  We miss you Joey, stay safe, and hopefully Joey will continue to send us posts.

Guys,

Hope all is well in Atlanta.
I wanted to break in my new boots so Gabe and i did the North Ridge of Mount Neva. You can check it out here http://www.mountainproject.com/v/colorado/alpine_rock/indian_peaks/105760650 (my pics are better)
It is easy 5th class ridge scrambling, it felt more like a very exposed hike. It was about 8 miles round trip, we left the car around 8 am and we were back by 3. I was really slow on the approach and we stopped a couple of times for snacks ect. the boots did great right out of the box and they climb well.

Joey Climbing

I did get a blister on the back of my heel but it is minor and more of a lacing issue. I didn’t find the terrain very challenging but the over all amount of physical effort at altitude was demanding. Very tired today. We tried to go as light as possible and opted to leave the gear at home. I did use trekking polls on the hike out which saved my knees.

Excellent Day

It was a great day to be hangin’ at High Country (Avenue) on Saturday.   Hayden with Gibbon Slacklines came by and showed us all how to get it done on the slackline.  We all learned a few new tricks and I know you will be seeing a Gibbon set-up the next time you are in my backyard.  We also learned how Gibbon Slacklines are so very different than a tie-down or tow strap.  Stop in the shop and we will be happy to explain it.  Sherri from next door at Harry and David was gracious enough to bring us some wonderfully marinated chicken breast and pork loin to throw on the the Big Green Egg.  That’s right I said Big Green Egg!  We fired it up for the first time at the Avenue and it was surely a success.  With what Harry and David provided and the delicious sausage we got from Fresh Market, everyone ate well.  We even grilled some of their sumptuous pears, a first for me, and it was Great!  Come by and get a Gibbon Slackline or a Big Green Egg of your own and next time we can have the party at your house.
